The Marshall Project is pleased to announce the hiring of Annaliese Griffin as its Newsletter Editor.
Griffin joins The Marshall Project full-time after working as a freelancer for the organization.
In this role, Griffin will edit and oversee the production of newsletters like Opening Statement, Closing Argument, as well as our local newsletter products and more. She will also review analytics, respond to reader needs and conceptualize new products.
In addition to her Newsletter Editor role, Griffin will also step into the newly created position of managing editor of News Inside, The Marshall Project’s print news magazine circulated inside prisons and jails. In collaboration with Lawrence Bartley, the publisher of The Marshall Project Inside, News Inside Manager Martin Garcia and Senior Editor Akiba Solomon, Griffin will help establish an editorial calendar, set deadlines, document how News Inside is produced, track production stages, and establish communications protocols to better connect News Inside with the newsroom.
“We’re delighted to welcome Annaliese in her new role — since we’ve worked together extensively already, we know how thoughtful, knowledgeable and collegial she is,” Editor-in-Chief Susan Chira said. “We look forward to her collaboration with the rest of our top-notch Audience team to help us reach more people in innovative ways.”
Prior to her work at The Marshall Project, Griffin edited Quartz’s Daily Obsession newsletter and co-founded the blog, Brooklyn Based. She has also contributed freelance articles to a range of publications, including guest essays for The New York Times. She is based in Vermont.
“I’m so thrilled to join The Marshall Project after spending several years as a freelancer in many different newsrooms, toggling between roles as a reporter, editor, manager and producer,” Griffin said. “I’ve been an email maven for close to 15 years, and I’m delighted that it remains such an important, effective and sometimes even fun way to reach readers. I also look forward to working with the News Inside team to directly reach incarcerated people.”
Griffin will report to Audience Director Ashley Dye, starting January 16.
Also effective January 16, Rachel Kincaid is shifting her focus to be The Marshall Project’s Newsletter Strategist, following a year-and-a-half tenure as the organization’s Newsletter Manager. In addition to her vital collaborative work with newsletter writers, Kincaid has created crucial databases and documentation, ranging from newsletter strategies, guidelines and best practices to audience surveys and analytics.
“I’m excited to design new ways to connect with readers through email-first journalism, and support strategy for our excellent suite of existing national and local newsletters,” said Kincaid.
She will now focus more heavily on the newsroom’s people- and data-driven newsletter strategy, including attracting and retaining subscribers by learning how The Marshall Project can best meet their needs. Based in Minneapolis, Kincaid will continue reporting to Dye while working closely with Griffin, newsletter writers and others across The Marshall Project.
“Rachel has been instrumental in strengthening our newsletter portfolio, and Annaliese has been a wonderful collaborator as a freelancer,” Dye said. “I’m excited to see how their complementing expertises will grow our ability to best serve and hear from many different communities.”
