Having been convicted of misdemeanor drunk driving in 2012, I was sentenced to 6 months in the county jail (I had 3 priors). The fine was $4,000, which I have no problem with (you can pay this amount off in installments or community service hours each month). I was also charged approximately $80 per day jail costs, which amounted to $14,449 or so. They tell me this must be paid in cash, no community service. I worked in the jail kitchen each day of my sentence and was given no credit for that. The jail costs were imposed at the judge’s discretion. What recourse does a citizen have here? I have been unemployed for a number of years.
